Just Webreg Things, and How Far I Am
Webreg always feels like it comes so early… but it really doesn’t. We’re already halfway through the semester. Just WOW. This semester has gone by so fast.
Anyway, the courses for next semester are up so I made my schedule today. I get to register on the second day so I anticipate actually getting into all of them. The upcoming semester will not be quite as intense as I am planning for only 4 studio courses, two of which are both 1.5 credits.
I want to take two Art History courses; The Art and Culture of Japan and Art since 1945. To be honest, neither of them excite me too much, but they’re both requirements. I need a “non-Western” Art History for the minor and 1945 is a requirement across the board, but it should be great since I hope to get into the Steck section. I intended on doing this last semester but it was full, which is why I took Illustration Survey a year early instead. I do like a bit of Japanese culture as well as woodblock printing so that class should be interesting, I just fear that it will be full of rabid anime-fans who are there because OMGIZJAPANSLULZ and not because they are genuinely interested in the culture beyond otaku-culture.
This segways into the fact I want to take relief printing next semester as well. I’ve been interested in it for a while, but it’s never really fit into my schedule. Interestingly it’s on the same day as Japan, so I’ll look at woodcuts in the morning then go make them in the evening. Mondays will be great days, if all works out. Additionally, I am going to take Advanced Printmaking, so this will be a great venue to explore personal work. I’ve gotten a heads-up that our first project will have a science-theme… heh heh heh. Jake is also going to be the professor, which is going to rule.
And next semester I’m going to suck it up and finally fill a requirement I’m about a year late on… Digital Trio. I’m reminded more and more frequently nowadays about my gap in knowledge of Adobe Suite, so I really can’t put this off any more. I was because it was an 830 class, and this semester only on Mondays and Wednesdays, and that’s not happening. Essentially Digital Trio covers Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign, and I reallly, really, really need to learn to use these programs even if digital art is not my primary medium.
I also want to take Woodworking I/II. I’m doing my wood project now, and I love it. Wood and Stone carving has been such a great class, I really would like to pursue this interest a little bit. I’m not sure where it will lead, but I like where I’m going. My wood/stone carving professor is also teaching this class, so it will be great. I’m going to try and convince Ares to take it too, but I don’t think he will want to come in on Fridays. :(
Finally, I’m going to get another class checked off on my history major. I only need to take 12 credits (four classes) for it (any I want, its 100% electives), and I’ve only taken one 3-credit class so far. I wanted to take World Civ II before anything else in the department, but it seems that I will NOT be doing that. My freshman year philosophy professor is offering a history class, and it almost doesn’t matter what it is, I’d take any class he offered. Ever. Fortunately it IS something I’m interested in; Modern European History. Both this class and Advanced Printmaking have screwed up the availability of other classes I wanted to take (like natural history drawing… BOO), but based on what I have lined up, things will work out just fine with 18 credits of good classes.
Webreg has also got me thinking about my overall completion level. I should be reaching about the halfway point after next semester. I always deconstruct my entire course history to plan ahead, to make sure I have all my bases covered, and am actually taking relevant classes. I have had some interesting results.
My program is a 5 year double major. In order to complete it, I must take a specific string of courses plus electives, which total up to 150 credits. Since LOIS is down and I don’t have access to my unofficial transcript, I remembered all my old courses and totaled everything up by hand. Right now, as of my fourth semester out of ten, I will have completed 68.5 credits. Factoring in my transfer credits from AP and this summer’s classes, I will have completed 83.5 credits. This means I am 55% done with my degree credit-wise. The fact that I have been able to transfer credits has put me an entire semester ahead. If I keep things up at this rate, I will be able to graduate at least one semester early, or become a part-time student and take only one or two classes (only offered in the spring) my final semester while working full time.
Sweet.
